  • Standardize date labels. “Best by” vs “use by” confusion drives needless discards. One clear, risk-based system cuts waste without risking safety.
  • Lean donation rules. Good Samaritan protections and simple tax treatment make it easier for stores and restaurants to donate surplus the same day.
  • Cash where markets work. In many crises, cash or e-vouchers buy food locally, support traders, and remove shipping delays. Food parcels are for places where markets are broken or blocked.
  • Buy closer to the need. Humanitarian agencies increasingly procure regionally, shaving weeks off delivery and keeping money in nearby economies.
  • Pre-position stocks. In places with seasonal roads or predictable storms, warehouses stocked in advance can bridge weeks of isolation.

None of this is a moonshot. It’s coordination—who does what, when, with which budget.

What saves lives fastest

Some interventions cut the daily death toll almost immediately when scaled:

  • Treatment for wasting. Ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) delivered through community health workers can move a child from severe wasting to recovery in weeks. It’s proven, and the supply can flow year-round with the right funding cadence.
  • Clean water and oral rehydration. Diarrhea plus undernutrition is deadly. Fixing water points and ensuring oral rehydration salts are always on the shelf keeps kids out of danger.
  • Vaccines. Pneumonia, rotavirus, measles—these infections drive mortality in undernourished kids. Vaccination pairs with nutrition to break the fatal spiral.

Each of these has a known cost curve. The barrier is steady funding and last-mile delivery, not scientific uncertainty.

What businesses and cities can do this quarter

If you run a grocery chain, a restaurant group, a farm co-op, or a city:

  • Audit and publish waste. You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Track waste by category and time of day. Fix the hotspots first.
  • Move surplus the same day. Partner with food banks and rescue apps that dispatch drivers in hours, not days. Give them predictable pickup windows.
  • Right-size portions and packs. Smaller default portions and split packs cut plate waste and keep food fresher in household fridges.
  • Fix date labeling. Adopt a clear two-label approach—one for quality, one for safety—and train staff to rotate stock correctly.

A simple way to think about it

People sometimes say, “There’s enough food to feed everyone.” That’s true, but incomplete. The missing pieces are time, place, and price—all symptoms of coordination. Children don’t eat global averages. They eat what shows up in the right village, on the right day, at a price their caregivers can pay.

That’s why this isn’t just a farmer’s problem or a doctor’s problem. It’s a systems problem. And systems can be redesigned. We already waste more than a billion meals every day.
